Industrial & Logistics

Industrial and logistics developments present a range of acoustic and air quality considerations, particularly where sites operate over extended hours, include significant building services plant, or generate frequent vehicle movements. These types of developments are often located close to existing residential or commercial receptors, meaning environmental constraints must be carefully assessed and managed.

At Dragonfly Consulting, we support industrial and logistics projects from early feasibility through planning, detailed design, and post-completion compliance, helping clients navigate environmental requirements with confidence.

We work across a wide range of industrial and logistics sectors, including distribution centres, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, data centres, and industrial parks. Our aim is to provide clear, practical advice that supports planning approval, protects operational flexibility, and ensures compliance with relevant environmental standards.

Acoustics

Noise is often one of the primary environmental considerations for industrial and logistics developments. We undertake baseline noise surveys and detailed noise impact assessments to support planning applications and inform the design process.

We assess noise from all relevant sources, including:

  • Fixed mechanical plant such as HVAC systems, chillers, and generators
  • Loading bays, dock levellers, and external handling areas
  • HGV movements, delivery activities, and yard operations
  • External processing plant and industrial equipment
  • Emergency and standby plant

Our assessments are carried out in accordance with national and local planning guidance as well as BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 and other relevant British Standards and Guidance Documents. We work closely with the project teams to identify appropriate mitigation where required, such as plant selection, acoustic enclosures, screening, or operational controls. Our aim is to ensure compliance with planning requirements while maintaining efficient site operation.

We also provide post-completion noise surveys and compliance testing where required to support planning condition discharge and operational verification.

Air Quality

Air quality can also be an important consideration for industrial and logistics developments, particularly where sites include combustion plant, process emissions, or generate significant vehicle movements. We carry out detailed air quality assessments to support planning applications, including dispersion modelling where required.

This includes assessment of emissions from:

  • Energy centres and combustion plant;
  • Standby generators and backup power systems;
  • Industrial processes where relevant;
  • HGV and site traffic movements; and
  • On-site plant and equipment.

Our assessments follow current national guidance and local authority requirements, providing robust evidence to support planning. Where necessary, we provide practical mitigation strategies to ensure compliance and minimise environmental impact.

Planning and Environmental Support

We work closely with developers, operators, architects, and engineers to ensure acoustic and air quality considerations are addressed efficiently throughout the project lifecycle. Our services include:

  • Feasibility and site appraisal;
  • Baseline environmental surveys;
  • Noise and air quality impact assessments;
  • Planning application support;
  • Design advice and mitigation strategies;
  • Planning condition discharge;
  • Post-completion testing and compliance surveys; and
  • Expert witness services where required.

Our experience allows us to identify potential constraints early and provide practical solutions that support successful planning and operation.

Supporting Modern Industrial and Logistics Infrastructure

At Dragonfly Consulting, we understand the operational requirements of modern industrial and logistics facilities. Our role is to help ensure environmental considerations are managed clearly and effectively, allowing developments to progress smoothly from concept through to operation.

By providing robust technical assessments and clear, practical advice, we help reduce risk, avoid delays, and support the successful delivery of industrial and logistics developments.
